Systems Engineering
These are without doubt among the UK’s most complex, professionally challenging and interesting roles in the discipline of systems engineering. If you are interested in an organisation that is regularly recognised as national class in SE and regularly delivers multi million pound complex IS and change programmes.
The context. As one of the UK’s intelligence agencies, we’re involved in helping counter the growth of online (and organised) crime and international terrorism. The speed of technological change, and the exponential rise in threats, is placing increasing pressure on our business – not least for greater integration with our sister organisations (Mi5 and Mi6). Alongside Programme and Business Management, Systems Engineering is helping set the direction of change at GCHQ at an enterprise level. Our work has a direct link to GCHQ’s strategic outcomes and helps support the operational systems that ‘make a difference’.
The scale and professional challenge. We’re home to one of the world’s largest communities of Systems Engineers, and our capability is recognised as national class. Many of our programmes are rated complex, and run into £100m+. Furthermore, you will be working alongside industry leaders whose expertise span communications, electronics and information technology. The contribution of SE is widely acknowledged and increasingly sought out, and sound SE principles and practices are embedded in the day-to-day work of the entire technical community.
The development opportunity. We have an unparalleled commitment to continuous professional development. Training covers both the technical and non-technical aspects of SE skills with a strong focus on mentoring and coaching. The size of our team means there is always a choice of career pathways for the individual. Ultimately, it’s an environment where people matter, where knowledge and expertise is shared and where careers flourish.
The roles. We need experienced Systems Engineering practitioners and leaders at all levels to contribute to our work at the leading edge of technology. You will be delivering complex assignments, taking responsibility for leading systems engineering teams, supporting major programmes, mobilising projects and working alongside senior staff and technical experts.
Your qualities. You must have a background in systems engineering projects or complex systems-based change initiatives - gained in an organisation within the defence, energy, manufacturing, transport or communications sectors. Specifically, you will have experience of systems engineering lifecycle management and understand how system change interacts with organisational change and risk management. Membership of a professional body such as INCOSE would be an advantage.
