Language Jobs - Graduate and/or Fluent Speakers

Understanding another language is one thing. Understanding its wider cultural issues is something else. At GCHQ, we need people who are able to do both.

Why?

Our linguists have the job of translating and assessing pieces of information and providing valuable intelligence. To do that effectively, it is not enough to be fluent in the language being spoken. You will probably need to have a grasp of the historical, social, religious and cultural viewpoint of the region also.

The need to be both a language and a cultural expert makes for a real intellectual and fascinating challenge. This role isn’t just about sitting around in a set of headphones all day. It’s about working as part of a large, supportive team, and having the chance to pursue a diverse, endlessly interesting career.

Fluent speakers

We recruit fluent speakers of many different languages, but predominantly languages from the following areas:

  • Eastern Europe
  • Middle East
  • Asia
  • Africa

Re-trainees

We also occasionally have graduate language jobs and non-graduate language jobs for people who have studied one of the following languages to join us as re-trainees:

  • Classical languages (Latin or Ancient Greek)
  • Two European languages (out of French, German, Italian or Spanish)
  • Japanese

You will go through an intensive 14-month classroom-based programme to be retrained up to degree standard in a completely different foreign language.

To become a Language and Culture Specialist you must be a British citizen, and a fluent English speaker.
