Language & Culture Specialists - Native capability and/or Graduates

Working as a Language & Culture Specialist at GCHQ is about more than being a linguist.  It's about using your unique understanding of how language is used and wider cultural issues to transport us to the heart of real life situations.  It's about finding true meaning in each and every exchange.

Alongside frontline analysts, our language and culture specialists have the job of gathering snippets of information across a range of different electronic communication channels.  Piecing together the information and providing valuable intelligence you’ll create a picture of exactly what’s happening, where and when.

In this role, you’ll have the chance to influence and shape the future – from presenting your findings and important meetings in Whitehall, to mentoring junior language and culture specialists and engaging in language outreach programmes in schools and other institutions. It very definitely isn’t just about sitting around in a set of headphones all day, but it is about being part of a large team, communicating and working with a wide range of people.

As well as your language ability you’ll need good communication, analysis and reporting skills, and a high standard of English. GCHQ employs more language specialists than anyone else in the country, so we have a real linguist community – and plenty of people to share your passion for language and other cultures.

What languages do we need?

We recruit both graduates and non graduates (native tongue) to our Language jobs.

Right now our key requirements are in:

  • Arabic (a second language or dialect would be an advantage)
  • Chinese (Mandarin)
  • Hindi (with either Punjabi or Urdu)
  • Korean
  • Mirpuri / Potohari (knowledge of Punjabi or Urdu would be an advantage)
  • Somali
  • West African languages

You’ll need a deep understanding of the language and dialect(s), and be comfortable with the language of the streets, with all its abbreviations, slang and cultural references. You don’t necessarily need to be able to speak the language to a high level – it’s your knowledge of the language, ability to translate, and analytical and reporting skills that we need. 

For the Hindi, Mirpuri / Potohari, Somali and West African roles we’re looking for people who have native capability. For the Arabic, Mandarin or Korean requirement it might be a language you’ve grown up with or studied at University. Due to the nature of our work, you’ll also need to be a British citizen to apply.
