8 in 10 office workers say they put in at least eleven hours a day. Haven't they ever heard of flexible working and the work-life balance?

Life at GCHQ

There are many misconceptions about working at GCHQ. We know from experience that some people think we're somehow a 'secret' business, where brainy 'boffins' work in darkened rooms, talk in hushed tones and avoid contact with the outside world. Others watch popular TV shows like 'Spooks' and take it at face value. The reality is of course rather different.

The first thing to remember is we're a Civil Service department employing the same types of people, and bound by the same rules, terms and working conditions as all other government departments, from HM Revenue & Customs, through to the Home Office. GCHQ brings together a rich mix of skills and personalities. We share clear and common aims, and blending individuals into effective teams is key to our success. Everybody within the organisation has a part to play in our mission.

We might be involved in extraordinary work, but our people are just ordinary people, with homes, families, and lives outside work.

And as you'll see, there are lots of interesting things going on - inside and outside our offices. Why not check out what the area has to offer.
