Joining GCHQ at graduate entry level is not like being on a typical 'general' graduate scheme. Primarily offering 'direct entry' routes for graduates, some of our roles require a specific or specialist degree, whilst others are wide open. Our tailor-made professional development programme will build your skills and help you further your career and interests on a specific career pathway.
Specialist degree options include:

- Information & Communications Technology (ICT) Research
- Telecommunications Engineering
- Mathematicians
- Information Specialists (Librarians)
- Language & Culture Specialists
Non degree specific routes include:
- GCHQ Leadership Development Scheme
- Language & Culture Specialists (native speakers)
- Corporate support
Due to the nature of our work, we are unable to offer general work experience, however, we do offer sponsorships/placements for students with a real technical interest and focus. The application process usually opens in the autumn of each year for these.
Whichever route you take, you will start at what we call 'entry level'. Once you are with us, other career paths may open out. As well as opportunities for personal and professional development (including, in some cases, formal study for professional qualifications), you can also expect a good starting salary and excellent benefits and conditions.
GCHQ Leadership Development Scheme (GLDS)
The GCHQ Leadership Development Scheme is designed to identify and hone the talents of the next generation of leaders. Typically lasting six years, the Scheme offers varied challenges, tailored training and close mentoring. You’ll complete a series of diverse placements – from intelligence analysis to finance, HR or corporate strategy. Working at the leading edge of modern intelligence and gaining invaluable experience of business functions, you’ll explore all of your untapped potential. (We usually accept applications for the scheme in the autumn).
You'll already have, or expect to gain, a 2.1 degree in any subject, with an impressive extra-curricular track record.
