Sponsorships & Placements
Due to the security restrictions of the department we (regrettably) are unable to offer work experience. However, every year we offer a number of sponsorships/placements for different disciplines. The details of each scheme vary from year to year, but you'll find the most up to date information right here.
We’re currently pleased to be offering summer and year-long placement scheme opportunities. There are even more chances to take on practical challenges this year with the launch of Summer Undergraduate Maths (SUM) alongside our Student Sponsorship Scheme. So if you’ve got the skills to help fight international terrorism and crime, we can offer you the experience.
Summer Undergraduate Maths is your chance to undertake a 9 to 12 week placement over the summer within GCHQ. You’ll practice advanced mathematical research with a large team of colleagues who have developed a wide range of mathematical disciplines. You’ll be due to graduate in 2013 or 2014 with a first class honours degree in maths or joint honours with maths as the major component.
The Student Sponsorship Scheme (formerly Sponsored Undergraduate Technologists) comes in three formats:
- Summer placement – 9 to 12 weeks over summer, starting July 2012 onwards plus subsequent sponsorship of final year
- 2-year summer placement – placements and sponsorship for last two years of degree
- Industrial placement year – 51 weeks plus subsequent sponsorship starting before 1 September 2012
It’s an opportunity to work on research, development, or projects within GCHQ's technical areas: Software Engineering, Telecommunications, Information and Communications Technology Research (ICTR), IT Infrastructure, and Cyber Security/Information Assurance. You’ll currently be studying computer science, information technology, software engineering, electronic engineering, telecommunications, or similar.
As long as you meet the specific requirements, you can be considered for both schemes at the same time, though you will have to complete two applications. Bring an enthusiasm for tackling the unexpected, and who knows where the placement might take you.
