Our work is vital. And so are our people. With us, your work really does matter - not just to our business, but to the security of our nation. After all, without your ingenuity, expertise and dedication, we wouldn't be able to succeed in our mission. So it matters to us that you have everything you need to be your best. Not just while you're at work, but to help you make the most of life outside work too.
We pride ourselves on our progressive approach, with family-friendly policies, flexible working patterns and practices that empower and support you, no matter what your background or experience.
And what else can you expect from us?
What To Expect
Our flexible approach to working hours means you can get the balance right between your life inside and outside GCHQ. Whether you want to work flexible patterns or have the ability to take days off here and there as necessary, there are plenty of options. We also don't have core hours, so as long as you fulfil your contracted hours around the business requirements, you can start and finish work at hours to suit you. You don't have to have family commitments to benefit either - our flexi time offers up to four days leave in a four week period, meaning you can build your hours around your life. You can also request part time or reduced and annualised or compressed hours, job sharing, or term time working as your commitments change.
In terms of our leave allowances, you'll start with 22 days holiday per year, rising to 25 after a year's service. This rises to 30 days leave after 10 years' of service. You'll also get 8 days of public holidays and another two days off as privilege leave on Christmas Eve and the Queen's birthday. It is possible to bank leave for future years, or alternatively, you can borrow from the following year's allowance if you are running low.
Learning and Development
When you start work at GCHQ, we want you to be confident in your role, so we offer significant investment in your professional and personal development including working with academia, industry and professional partnerships. No matter where you work in the business, we aim to ensure that you have the time and resources you need to fulfil your potentials, including mentoring schemes and development programmes. You are also given time off to 'innovate' allowing you to further your development and remain at the cutting edge of our work.
Keen on sport or looking to get fitter? GCHQ has a gym on site, open 24 hours every day. Membership costs are low and no contract applies. There are also over twenty sports clubs catering for all abilities, from basketball, tennis and running to ultimate Frisbee, ten pin bowling and sailing. Football and cricket is also widely played within GCHQ with over twenty work teams participating in the Inter Departmental Football leagues.
A range of treatments are also available on site to use in your free time, from beauty and massages to musculoskeletal therapy and chiropractic treatments. Our Occupational health and Employee Assistance teams offer help with maintaining and improving physical and mental wellbeing. Free eye tests vouchers are also provided for a leading optician.
Plus there are also over 20 groups at GCHQ for people to share their common interests. If you felt you missed out by not joining groups at college, you can still try your hand at photography, caving or singing with our diverse range of societies.
Community and Culture
In our Cheltenham headquarters, you can make use of our excellent facilities with a restaurant, deli bar, coffee shops, cash machines and a shop. Getting to work is easy with 'the doughnut' well served by affordable buses. A cycle to work scheme is also available , where you can claim an advance in salary to buy a bike, motorcycle or scooter. If you do decide to drive, parking on site is free (although restrictions may apply).
GCHQ is proud of our active role in the community at all of our locations. Special leave is available to undertake voluntary work and we have excellent relationships with local charities and schools for volunteering. Employees can also make gifts to charities of their choice, free of income tax, by monthly deduction from their salary.
We have an excellent disability strategy, with active support groups and a wide range of workplace adjustments to meet the needs of everyone, whether wheelchair user, visually or hearing impaired, long term medical conditions or processing differences. see also our Diversity page
Our flexible working practices allow people to plan their work around the constraints of childcare and the school run. We try and help in other places as well though, by offering childcare vouchers to help with the costs of pre-school care. In the school holidays, we offer a Playscheme rated as 'Good' by Ofsted. Our maternity, paternity and adoption leave provisions are also outstanding.
We regularly host family events, allowing relatives of current employees to visit our fantastic building and find out more about what we do.
We also offer access to Aviva life insurance under preferential circumstances.
Pay, pension and more
Our pay scales are reviewed annually in October and additional pay is available based on performance and skill levels.
As GCHQ is a Civil Service organisation, you will be entitled to join the Civil Service Pension scheme and GCHQ will pay the majority of your pension contributions.
All employees are entitled to trade union representation through the Government Communications Group within the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS). By joining, you'll be eligible for a range of benefits and support services, as well as discounts for a variety of goods and local services.
